Meeting of Sept 4, 2008

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you to those who showed interest by attending the September 4th meeting. I started off the meeting with a brief talk about the increase in panhandling near Wal-Mart and Hilander. I had an unpleasant experience myself at Wal-Mart at the gas station and have since spoken to the manager at both stores to be sure that they were aware of the situation. Also, I reported the incident to the Rockford Police and Winnebago Sheriff Department.

We then talked about the incidents in our more immediate area; a purse robbery about midnight on Peace Pipe and Tomahawk, a daytime robbery on Stage Coach , neighboring Will Ann Dr had a daytime robbery as well robbery. Two of the robbery victims attended and shared their experience.

Our new Deputy Yida Berrios confirmed that while some arrests were made for the recent Rockford robberies the investigation was continuing and had not been tied to the activity in this area. She suggested that we use our driver license number as identification etched into TVs, computers, stereos, etc. to assist the police in recovery. She warned us not to leave mail in the mailbox as there has been an increase in mail theft. If you can, hand your outgoing mail directly to the carrier. Deputy Berrios brought a supply of informative handouts and magnets etc. After she spoke, she answered questions and presented safety suggestions. Did you know that the Sheriff’s Department will do a house check if you advise them that you are away?

Things you can do: Leave a radio on in the house, trim your shrubs below your windows, use your outside lighting, and talk to your neighbors. Watch suspicious people and make note of a license plate number if you can. Get a good description of the car or person. Speaking of license plates, they are being stolen at a higher rate than usual. You might not notice yours missing until you get a summons or a phone call from the police. The thief takes your plate, fills his gas tank without paying, and you get the summons and the bill. Make sure your plates are secure with tight fasteners. Don’t make it easy for them.

Another topic discussed was Crimestoppers. Don’t be afraid to call the police at this number: 963-7867. You do not need to give your name. The police will give you an ID PIN number which you may use to follow up on the incidence. If an arrest is made based on the information that you provided, you be given the name of the bank where the reward may be claimed by the PIN number. Let’s use this mechanism to turn the tables on the thieves. There is no risk to you. Enjoy the reward by knowing that you did the right thing, share the reward with the neighborhood, your family, donate it to charity, or enjoy it yourself!

Lastly, we are working on compiling an email list to share suspicious activity, report incidents to each other, and ask questions about Neighborhood Watch. If you would like to be included just email me at Fndgarner@comcast.net.

Stay well and be safe,
